Three fabulous Year 10 students grasped the opportunity of completing a week of work experience at The Space with KBSK in July 2025. And what a tremendous time they had!
One student said she enjoyed the whole experience, but her top choice was working at the Rhythm and Rhyme session. All three students enjoyed engaging with babies, their parents and siblings. Her other highlight was working in The Space Café. “I’ve mastered milkshakes, and I created a new chocolate brownie one. It is so good. Banging!”
Conducting interviews for posts at KBSK was in top place for another of the students. All three agreed that the most challenging job of the week was writing questions to ask the candidates, as they really wanted to get this right. Similarly, it was difficult to probe further in response to the answers given during the interviews, as it had to be done on the spot and without any preparation or planning.
One young person, who only visits The Space for evening dance classes, couldn’t believe how much work is done during the day at the venue. She said: “It’s so interesting to see how much goes on in a typical week.” Equally surprised and blown away with everything KBSK does was the teacher who dropped in to find out how the work experience students were doing. He said how impressed he was by the variety of things the three young people had been able to do in just one week!
Things picked up during the placement include writing risk assessments for a performance and outing, event planning, writing host notes for the KBSK Summer Show, understanding all aspects of the interview processes including feeding back reasoned opinions after questioning candidates to the adult interview panel, food safety and hygiene for café work and mixing with adults, babies, children, young people and older visitors at the Cuppa Care and Parkinson’s group.
One of the students who is home-schooled didn’t think it would be possible for her to do work experience. When she secured a placement at The Space both she and her mum were over the moon.
Somehow the three busy work experience students managed to find time to complete the school’s logbook and create stunning scrapbooks of what they accomplished during their time at The Space.
